The nonprofit I co-founded held a running event that has become an annual tradition, the first of its kind in San Francisco—an event that’s inclusive, enlightening, dynamic, and fun. An event that reflects how much Asian history is intertwined with this city. We celebrate these places that past generations have dreamt into existence for us.

A historical photo of friends on a porch inspired the look & feel of the event.

It was taken not long before the Japanese residents were sent to internment camps. I used this then/now photograph theme to really surface and capture all of the complex emotions we have.

Designing for activism is a new challenge for me, and often sends me into an existential spiral. How do I convey pride and heritage without being cheesy? When does a respectful reference cross the line? But it’s important to ask these questions.

WHY IT'S AWESOME

Design goes beyond what we see.
Running this event challenged us to really create a multi-sensory experience that’s valuable and memorable.
